The Prayer of Ernest Renan at the Acropolis

By Dimitrios Voggolis, Lieutenant General (Retd), Coordinator of the International Hellenic Association’s (IHA) Committee – the Organization for the Preservation of the Greek Language (OPGL)

On the occasion of the return to Greece of three 2,500-year-old fragments of the Parthenon by Pope Francis, I am reminded of the remarkable European thinker, poet, and author Ernest Renan (1823 – 1892), who when he ascended the Acropolis was dazzled by its flawless beauty and unadorned splendor.

He expressed his admiration in the form of a prayer to Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war in the following abridged poetic speech.

Oh sublime nobility! Oh true and simple beauty! Goddess, the worship of whom signifies reason and wisdom. You whose temple is an eternal message of conscience and truth, I come late to the threshold of your mysteries; I bring to the foot of your altar much remorse.

To find you, I have had to research endlessly. The initiation which you conferred by just a smile upon the Athenian at his birth I have acquired by the labor of much reflection and the struggle of many attempts.

You alone are young, Oh Kore; you alone are pure, Oh Virgin; you alone are healthy, Oh Hygeia; you alone are mighty, Oh Victory! You protect the cities, Oh Champion; You possess what is needed by Ares himself, Oh Warrior of Ares; peace is your aim, Oh Peace bearer!

Salvation for the world is possible only by returning to your allegiance and by repudiating its barbaric ties. Let us hasten. Let us come forward in masses. Glorious will be the day when all the nations which have stolen the fragments of your temple – Venice, Paris, London, and Copenhagen and others – shall rectify their larceny, and form sacred missions to return these ancient fragments in their possession, proclaiming:

Forgive us, Oh Goddess. We committed these acts to save them from the evil spirits of the night and your walls shall be rebuilt to the sounds of flutes.

MAY THE PRAYER OF RENAN BECOME A LIGHTHOUSE SHOWING THE WAY FOR THE RETURN OF ALL OUR LOOTED ANCIENT WEALTH!
